Do Cats Really Need Clothes?

Why should you dress up your cat? Clothes allow you to express your cat’s personality. While cats often exhibit similar behaviors, such as “making biscuits,” they are all special and have a unique personality. Maybe your cat is a loner that prefers to bask on the windowsill in isolation, or perhaps your cat is an attention-seeking diva that demands petting around the clock.

With cat clothes, you can express your cat’s personality to the world. Cat clothes are available in a variety of colors, patterns and styles. Regardless of your cat’s personality, there’s probably a piece of apparel with his name on it; you just need to find it.

While most owners dress their cats up in costumes and outfits because they look cute, it could actually prove beneficial. Clothes will protect them from cold temperatures. Cats are susceptible to the cold. While their fur provides some insulation, it may not be sufficient in extreme weather conditions.

Exposure to cold temperatures places cats at risk for hypothermia and frostbite. Clothes,  serve as an additional layer of protection. A piece of winter-weather apparel will minimize the loss of body heat so that your cat stays warm and comfortable.

Some cats will benefit from the warmth of clothes more than others. If you have a cat with a thin or fine coat of fur, conventional wisdom should tell you that he won’t have much protection against cold temperatures. There are breeds that don’t have any fur. These hairless cats are particularly susceptible to cold temperatures due to their lack of thermal-regulating fur.  Regardless, clothes can protect your fabulous feline from cold temperatures.

Common hairless cat breeds include:

  • Bambino
  • Canadian Sphynx
  • Donskoy (Don Sphynx)
  • Dwelf
  • Elf Cat
  • Kohona
  • Minskin
  • Peterbald
  • Sphynx
  • Ukrainian Levkoy

If your cat suffers from contact dermatitis, you may want to invest in some clothes for him. Contact dermatitis is a form of skin allergies. It’s characterized by dry, itchy and irritated skin in response to direct contact with an allergen. Pollen or mold spores, for instance, may land on your cat’s skin, resulting in an allergic reaction. Clothes will cover your Chihuahua’s body so that he’s less likely to come into contact with allergens.

How to Choose Cat Clothes

The possibilities are endless when shopping for cat clothes. You don’t have to limit yourself to choosing a generic solid-colored shirt. To truly pamper your cat and express his personality, you should take the time to choose a more stylish garment or accessory.

Don’t be afraid to experiment with different clothes and accessories. If you think something will look cute on your cat, give it a try to see how it looks. Remember, dressing your cat is all about having fun and creating lasting memories with your feline friend. As long as your cat is comfortable in a piece of apparel, it’s a smart investment for both of you. With so many options, though, how do you know which piece of apparel to purchase?

Some of the different types of cat clothes and accessories to consider include:

  • Knitted sweaters
  • Dresses (yes there are dresses made for cats)
  • Hoodies with an attached cap or hood
  • Graphic t-shirts with logos or phrases
  • Bow ties for the formal-looking cat
  • Superhero outfits
  • Nighttime pajamas
  • Matching bride-and-groom wedding outfits
  • Animal costumes
  • Thick wool sweaters
  • Winter scarfs
  • Booties and socks
  • Waterproof raincoats
  • Button-front vests
  • Black-tie suits

The suggestions listed above are just a few of the many cat clothes and accessories available. If you’re buying clothes for the sole purpose of keeping your cat warm, you should consider the fabric from which it’s made. Like clothes for us humans, cat clothes are available in different fabrics. Some of them are made of linen, whereas others are made of cotton, wool or even synthetic materials.

Obviously, a bow tie isn’t going to offer much in terms of warmth for a cold cat, but a wool sweater certainly will. Wool is prized for its insulative properties. It offers excellent thermal insulation — more so than linen and cotton. A wool sweater will minimize the loss of body heat so that your cat stays warm all winter long.

For the spring and summer months, you may want to choose thinner and more lightweight clothes. Clothes made of cotton and linen are better choices for this time of year.  They are less effective at trapping body heat than wool, making them ideal for the spring and summer months.

Choose the Right Size

One of the most important things to consider when shopping for cat clothes is the size. Some cats, of course, are bigger than others.  With an average weight of 25 pounds, Maine Coons rival the size of many dogs.  Singapuras, on the other hand, weigh 4 to 8 pounds on average. Regardless of what breed you own, you’ll need to choose clothes that fit him.

Make Your Cat Comfortable!

When it’s time to dress your cat, you should take precautions to ensure he is relaxed and comfortable. Cats are finicky and downright stubborn at times. While some of them will gladly accept a new garment or accessory, others will run away in fear.  You can ease your cat’s dress-up-related anxiety by following a few tips.

Start by introducing your cat to the clothes. Rather than dressing them in a new garment, for instance, place the garment on your cat’s back. You don’t have to place the garment over your cat’s entire body. As long as it’s resting on his back, your cat should become acclimated to it. He will realize that the garment isn’t a threat, so your cat will be more relaxed when you actually dress him in the garment.

When you’re ready to dress up your cat, create a relaxing environment, such as a sofa or recliner. Make sure the television is off and there are no small children or other pets running around the house.  Stimuli such as these may excite your cat and increase his anxiety. With a relaxing environment, your cat won’t be stressed or “jumpy,” making it easier for you to dress him.

After coaxing your cat onto your lap, gently pull the garment over his body. Remember, cat clothes don’t fit the same as our human clothes, so be gentle. If the garment doesn’t fit, don’t force it. Being gentle when dressing up your cat will promote a positive experience that makes future dress-up sessions easier. You can also speak softly while dressing up your cat to further relax him.

Treats, Treats, Treats!

Don’t underestimate the power of treats. Like their canine counterparts, cats love treats. You can use this to your advantage by giving your cat a treat. It’s a form of positive reinforcement. Your cat will associate treats with getting dressed. The next time you want to style your cat in a cute outfit, he may eagerly hop onto your lap while purring in hopes of earning a tasty treat.

Give your cat a treat immediately before and after dressing him. You can even use a treat to distract your cat while you dress him. Holding the treat in front of his face will divert your cat’s attention away from the garment or accessory.
